Small changes at home that make a big difference on game night.
Wired beats wireless, every time
Hockey is fast, and fast motion is where a weak connection shows first. If your Firestick or Android box sits far from the router, an Ethernet adapter (around $15) is the single best upgrade you can make. It removes the Wi-Fi hop that causes most stuttering during a power play.
If you must use Wi-Fi, use 5GHz
Most routers broadcast two networks. The 2.4GHz band reaches further but is slower and crowded; the 5GHz band is faster over shorter distances. Connect your TV device to 5GHz and keep it within a room or two of the router.
Count your streams before the playoffs
A single plan plays on one screen at a time. If someone wants the game in the living room while another person watches in the basement, you need a multi-connection plan. Work out your busiest night — usually a playoff game — and choose the plan that covers it.
Firestick or Smart TV?
